Lying on the side of the road in Muscoy, California, a German shepherd named Marley waited for help. By her side, a fluffy red dog sat patiently \u2014 guarding his injured friend.<\/p>\n

Hours passed, and cars continued to fly by but not a single one stopped to check on the\u00a0two animals<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Until, finally, one did.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe received a message she was lying on the side of the road,\u201d Faith Easdale, a rescuer with\u00a0Dream Fetchers: Project Rescue<\/a>, told The Dodo. \u201cMarley was in terrible distress and pain and breathing heavily. We weren\u2019t even sure if she was going to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Marley\u2019s protector, a fellow stray named Murphy,\u00a0refused to budge<\/a>\u00a0as Easdale and another man lifted Marley into the car. \u201cShe was very heavy and hard to move, but we did it,\u201d Easdale said. \u201cMurphy wouldn\u2019t leave her side on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Once they were safely in the car, Murphy cuddled up to Marley in the back seat, resting his head on her large belly.<\/p>\n

It was as if the two dogs knew that the hard part was over \u2014 now, all they had to do was heal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Easdale rushed the dogs to the hospital, where Marley\u2019s X-rays revealed a number of broken bones and a special surprise.<\/p>\n

Marley was pregnant with 11 puppies.<\/p>\n

Her best friend continued to wait by her side during those first few terrifying days. But slowly, Murphy seemed to realize that Marley was in good hands.\u00a0Easdale could see that he wasn\u2019t really bonded with her, and set to work finding him a good home. \u201cHe was able to be with her in the hospital but she was so critical that he wanted to go run and play,\u201d Easdale said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Marley was in so much pain, but despite everything, she gave birth to 11 healthy puppies.<\/p>\n

And even with two of her legs in casts, she was still determined to be a loving, attentive mom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It took two years, but with the help of her foster mom and a number of vets and carers, Marley has healed completely. \u201cMarley is just as sweet and beautiful as the day we brought her home,\u201d her adopters wrote on Facebook. \u201cShe plays like she has never had a broken bone.\u201d<\/p>\n

And Marley’s rescuers couldn’t be happier that the\u00a0strong mom<\/a>\u00a0and her pups have come so far.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was special and we all knew it,\u201d Easdale said. \u201cToday, her babies are all grown up and Marley is loved and cherished.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
